Sandakphu at a glance
Sandakphu, at 3,636 m, is the highest point in West Bengal, on the Singalila Ridge along the India–Nepal border inside Singalila National Park. On clear days it shows four of the world's five highest peaks: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. Treks start at Manebhanjan near Darjeeling, pass Tumling and Kalipokhri, and often continue to Phalut.
The route
The trail follows the Singalila Ridge, crossing between India and Nepal in places, with overnight stays in village tea houses. A rough road runs alongside much of the route and is still used by vintage Land Rovers.
Many treks continue from Sandakphu to Phalut for an even wider panorama before descending.
When to go
October to December gives the clearest mountain views. March to May brings rhododendrons in bloom, with more haze. The monsoon hides the views and makes trails wet.
Safety notes
Network is patchy along the ridge, and the border crossings can make phone networks switch unexpectedly. Download maps in advance.
Mornings on the ridge are very cold even outside winter. Pack warm layers.
Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.
