Ladakh dirt tracks at a glance

Ladakh is a high-altitude desert where roads cross passes above 5,000 m, including Khardung La, Chang La and Umling La. Popular routes from Leh go to the Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Hanle. Permits and environmental fees apply in several areas, and acclimatising in Leh for at least two days before going higher is essential. The main season is June to September.

Routes from Leh

Nubra Valley over Khardung La, Pangong Tso over Chang La, and the long drive to Hanle and Umling La are the classic loops. Some connecting tracks are rough, with sand, gravel and water crossings.

Altitude and permits

Leh is already about 3,500 m. Rest for at least 48 hours before going higher, and don't stop for long on the highest passes.

Several areas require permits or environmental fees, and the rules have changed over the years. Check the Leh administration's current requirements before you set out.

Fuel, network and safety

Fuel stations are far apart outside Leh; carry spare fuel on long legs. Network is limited outside towns, and often only some operators work.

Convoys spread out over long distances here. A group map that works over Bluetooth, plus SOS that also reaches nearby phones, adds a backup when there is no signal.

Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.
