Kalsubai Peak at a glance
Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra at about 1,646 m, in the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary near Igatpuri. The usual route starts at Bari village and gains roughly 1,000 m, with iron ladders and railings on the steep rock sections. Most groups take 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down. It is best from July to February; the monsoon is beautiful but slippery and often foggy.
The route from Bari
The standard trail leaves Bari village and climbs through fields and patches of forest before reaching the first of several steep rock steps. Iron ladders and chains have been fixed on the steepest sections, so no technical climbing is needed, but you do need steady footing.
Above the ladders the trail follows the ridge to a small summit temple. On a clear day you can see the Bhandardara reservoir and the forts around Harishchandragad and Alang–Madan–Kulang.
When to go
July to September is the monsoon season: waterfalls, green slopes and thick cloud, with slippery rock and strong wind at the top. October to February is drier and clearer. Summer (March to May) is hot, so start before dawn and carry more water than you think you need.
Night treks timed to reach the summit for sunrise are popular on weekends, which also means the ladders can get crowded.
Safety notes
Mobile signal is patchy on the upper half of the climb. Save the offline map before you leave Bari, and agree a regroup point at the foot of the ladders.
In fog it is easy to lose the group on the summit ridge. A live group map that keeps working over Bluetooth helps here.
Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.

It is rated moderate. The gain is about 1,000 m and there are steep ladder sections, but no technical climbing. Fit beginners manage it, ideally with an experienced group.
