Kudremukh at a glance

Kudremukh is a peak of about 1,894 m in Kudremukh National Park, Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka. The name means 'horse face' after the shape of the summit. It is a long day trek through shola forest and open grassland, done with forest department permission and a guide. October to February is the best season; in the monsoon there are leeches and very little visibility.

Permits and guides

Kudremukh is inside a national park, so you need permission from the Karnataka Forest Department and treks are normally done with a forest guide. Booking rules and daily limits change, so confirm the current process before you travel.

The route

The trail starts in forest, crosses streams and then opens onto long grassland ridges with little shade. It is a long day in distance rather than in steepness, so a steady pace and an early start matter.

Carry enough water for the exposed upper section, and plan to be back below the grassland before the afternoon cloud comes in.

Safety notes

There is little or no network on most of the route. Download the map in advance and keep your group together on the grassland, where trails can fork.

Leeches are common in and after the monsoon. Leech socks and salt help.

Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.
