The short answer
To stay safe without network: download offline maps before you leave, tell someone at home your route and return time, agree regroup points and a turnaround time with your group, keep the group in sight or on a shared map, carry a charged phone and power bank, and know how you will call for help, whether by SMS when a bar appears, a Bluetooth alert to nearby phones, or sending someone to the nearest village.
1. Download maps before you lose signal
Save the route and its map while you still have network, ideally at home on Wi-Fi. GPS works without mobile data, so an offline map still shows your position.
In TrailScout, saving a trail downloads its map automatically.
2. Tell someone at home
Share where you are going, who you are with, and when you expect to be back. Agree what they should do if they don't hear from you by a set time.
3. Agree regroup points and a turnaround time
Before you start, pick two or three places where everyone waits: a junction, the foot of a climb, a summit. Set a turnaround time and stick to it, even if you haven't reached the top.
The person at the back matters most. Put an experienced person there and never leave them behind.
4. Keep the group on one map
Groups split up on steep climbs and in fog. Phones can share location with each other over Bluetooth with no network, so a group map can keep showing the leader, the back and the gap in between.
5. Have an SOS plan
Save emergency contacts, and know the local emergency number (112 in India). SMS often gets through on a weak signal when calls don't. A Bluetooth alert can reach other phones in your group or nearby.
If someone is hurt and nothing gets through, the usual plan is for two people to go for help while others stay with the injured person.
6. Protect your battery
Cold drains batteries fast. Carry a power bank, keep your phone warm, use battery saver and avoid constant screen use.
Frequently asked questions
Does GPS work without mobile network?
Yes. GPS uses satellites, so your phone can show your location on an offline map without any mobile data or signal.
Can phones share location without network?
Yes, over short range. Apps like TrailScout relay location between phones in a group over Bluetooth, so the group map keeps working.
What is the emergency number in India?
112 is the single emergency number in India.
