The short answer
For off-roading in India, TrailScout covers track discovery (grade, vehicle fit, live reports on crossings), offline navigation and convoy mode that keeps every vehicle on one map over Bluetooth with SOS. OsmAnd and OruxMaps are popular for detailed offline maps and GPX tracks. Gaia GPS adds topographic and satellite layers. Mappls (MapmyIndia) and Google Maps are good for the road sections and towns, but are not designed for dirt tracks.

What off-roaders need
Track knowledge, not just a line on a map. How rough is it, will my vehicle make it, and is the crossing passable today?
Offline navigation. Spiti, Ladakh and most Ghats tracks have long stretches with no network.
A convoy view. Vehicles spread out over kilometres. Knowing who is last in line matters more than the leader's ETA.
A way to call for help. SMS gets through on weak signal; Bluetooth reaches nearby vehicles when nothing else does.
A practical setup
Use TrailScout for the track, the convoy and SOS; keep OsmAnd or OruxMaps as a detailed backup map; and use Mappls or Google Maps for the tarmac to the start. Download everything before you leave network.
We make TrailScout, so we have an obvious interest. We have tried to describe each app fairly. Features and pricing change, so check each app's store listing before you choose.
