Hampta Pass at a glance
Hampta Pass is a crossing of about 4,270 m in the Pir Panjal range, linking the Kullu valley near Manali with Lahaul. The trek usually starts at Jobra and camps at Chika, Balu ka Ghera and Shea Goru before crossing the pass and descending to Chatru. Many groups add a drive to Chandratal lake. It takes 4–5 days and is best from June to September.
Typical itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Manali to Jobra and walk to Chika. Day 2: Chika to Balu ka Ghera along the river. Day 3: Cross Hampta Pass and descend to Shea Goru. Day 4: Shea Goru to Chatru, often with a drive to Chandratal. Day 5: Return to Manali.
Itineraries vary with the operator, the weather and the group's acclimatisation.
Altitude and crossings
The pass is high enough for altitude sickness (AMS). Ascend gradually, drink water, and descend if symptoms such as a severe headache, vomiting or confusion appear.
Snowmelt streams rise during the day. Cross early in the morning, unclip hip belts and cross as a group.
Safety notes
There is no reliable network after the first day. Offline maps, a group map that works over Bluetooth, and SOS that broadcasts to nearby phones are exactly what this trek needs.
Weather on the pass can turn in an hour. Agree a turnaround time for the crossing day.
Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.
