Lohagad at a glance

Lohagad is a hill fort of about 1,033 m near Malavli, between Lonavala and Pune. It is an easy trek and a favourite first monsoon outing. The trail from Lohagadwadi climbs through four gates (Ganesh, Narayan, Hanuman and Maha Darwaja) to the top, where the Vinchu Kata ridge stretches out like a scorpion's tail. Visapur fort sits right next door and can be combined in a day.

The route

From Malavli station it is a walk to Lohagadwadi village, which can also be reached by road. From there a stepped path climbs through the four gates to the top of the fort.

The walk out along Vinchu Kata is the highlight. In wind or rain, stay well back from the edges.

Monsoon crowds

Lohagad is one of the busiest monsoon treks in Maharashtra. On weekends, start early or go on a weekday. Agree a meeting point at the Maha Darwaja so nobody gets lost in the crowd.

Fitter groups often add Visapur fort, which is steeper and quieter.

Safety notes

Steps get slippery and streams cross the path in heavy rain. Wear shoes with real grip.

Network is usually available near the base, but not always on the ridge. Saving the map offline costs nothing and helps if it drops.

Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.
