Kedarkantha at a glance

Kedarkantha is a summit of about 3,800 m in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, inside the Govind Pashu Vihar area. Treks start from Sankri village, pass the Juda ka Talab lake and camp below the summit before a pre-dawn summit push. It is best known as a winter snow trek from December to April, and takes 4–6 days in total.

The route

From Sankri the trail climbs through pine and oak forest to Juda ka Talab, a small lake that freezes in winter, and then to the base camp below the summit.

Summit day starts in the dark to reach the top for sunrise and get down before the snow softens.

Winter conditions

In winter, snow covers the upper trail and night temperatures drop well below freezing. Microspikes or gaiters, warm layers and a good sleeping bag are essential.

Roads to Sankri can be affected by snow, so leave buffer days.

Safety notes

Network disappears soon after Sankri. Save the offline route and keep the group together on summit day, when people spread out in the dark.

Watch for signs of altitude sickness and frostbite, and set a firm turnaround time.

Check before you go. Permits, access rules, camping regulations and trail conditions change. Confirm the current situation with the local forest department or administration, check the weather, and read recent condition reports before you set out.
